First day to learn to be ponied for Don Diego.

I rode Patron and schooled this pair for about 30 minutes, nice and slow, making turns and stops, around the arena in both directions, and then asked Ruth to ride for two minutes so that I could take pictures.

I am teaching Ruth that you ALWAYS turn your horse TOWARD your pony horse if you run into trouble. This keeps him from being able to wrap the rope around you and pull you out of the saddle, or from being able to wrap the rope up under your horse's tail, which could cause a pretty scary reaction if your horse is offended by a sudden, unexpected rope under his tail!

Ponying can be risky and dangerous, so it is best to learn it and train it at a very slow speed, and always after you've already worked your horse and he is tired and calm.
